Where to find your water service line
The best place to test is where your service line comes into the home, usually in the mechanical room. You'll want to test the line before the shutoff valve. This is the dividing point between your service line and your in home system.

How to test your water service line
First, apply a magnet to the pipe. If the magnet is attracted to the pipe, the pipe is galvanized.
If the magnet is not attracted to the pipe, do the following scratch test. Use the flathead screwdriver or coin to carefully scratch the pipe surface somewhere between the wall/floor and shutoff valve.
Compare the lines in your home to the line descriptions listed in the illustrations and select the material option it best matches.
