The Municipal Officer Election shall be held on March 1, 2022. Polls will open at 7:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall, Training Room.
At the Municipal Officer Election, persons shall be elected to fill the following at large elective offices:
- Mayor, for a four-year term
Commencing April 1, 2022 - One Councilmember, for a four-year term
Commencing April 1, 2022 - One Councilmember, for a four-year term
Commencing April 1, 2022 - Municipal Judge, for a four-year term
Commencing April 1, 2022

Vote Early
Early Voting
Early Voting for the Municipal Officer Election begins Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at Town Hall, Conference Room No. 109, 400 Camino de la Placita, Taos, New Mexico, and ends on Saturday, February 26, 2022. The hours of operation shall be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Monday-Friday). The office is closed on February 21, 2022, in observance of Presidents Day. Saturday, February 26, 2022, hours of operations shall be from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Absentee Voting
The first day Absentee Ballots can be issued is Tuesday, February 1, 2022. A mailed ballot shall be requested no later than February 24, 2022. The last day the Office of the Town Clerk shall mail absentee ballots is Friday, February 25, 2022. Completed official mailing envelopes (with absentee ballots inside) shall be accepted until 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, March 1, 2022. The last day to request an absentee ballot is February 24, 2022.
Declaration of Candidacy
- Declaration of Candidacy shall be filed with the Town Clerk on January 4, 2022, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Write-in candidates shall file a Declaration of Candidacy with the Town Clerk between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on January 11, 2022.
Note: Candidates must be registered to vote with the Taos County Clerk’s Office on or before December 1, 2021, (the date the Secretary of State issues the Municipal Officer Election Proclamation.)

Candidate Qualifications Challenges (§1-22-10)
Any voter may challenge the candidacy of any person seeking election for the reason that the person does not meet the requirements for the office sought by filing a petition in the district court within seven (7) days after the day for filing a declaration of candidacy. The district court shall hear and render a decision on the matter within ten (10) days after the filing of the petition. The decision of the district court may be appealed to the supreme court within five (5) days after the decision is rendered. The supreme court shall hear and render a decision on the appeal forthwith.
Eligibility to Vote for the Municipal Officer Election Day
In accordance with state statute, to be eligible to vote, a person must be a resident and registered to vote within the municipal boundaries. To vote in the Municipal Officer Election you must be registered to vote within 28 days before an election (Section 1-4-8, NMSA 1978).
Same Day Voter Registration
Voters can register to vote or update an existing voter registration and vote on the same day at Town Hall during the early voting period (February 1, 2022, through February 26, 2022). Same day voter registration will not be available on election day.
